What are Dermal Fillers?
There are various types of dermal filler available. The safest and most widely used are ‘hyaluronic acid’ dermal fillers which provide immediate results from a single treatment with minimal downtime.
Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are a clear sterile gel contained within a syringe for injection and placed into the skin to provide instant correction. The depth at which dermal filler is placed is dependent on the type of dermal filler and intended location of placement. Each brand has a range of ‘tissue tailored’ products designed for specific results.
What is Hyaluronic Acid and how does it work?
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring sugar chain molecule found in all skin and soft tissues throughout the body, identical across species. It attracts and binds water in the skin, providing volume and hydration, but also ‘cushioning’ and supporting collagen and elastin fibres and providing a medium, or carrier, for chemical messages between the cells.
Not all hyaluronic acids are the same and legitimate brands are NOT available for general sale on the internet. Dermal filler should only be administered by medically trained and experienced clinicians.

How long does it take to see results after dermal fillers and how long do dermal fillers last?
Results are noticeable immediately following treatment and, over the next few weeks, the dermal filler becomes fully integrated within the existing facial structures of where it was placed.
Depending on type of dermal filler used, the site of treatment and the client’s own metabolism, treatment can last anywhere between 6 to 18 months approximately.
How long will dermal filler treatment take?
Dermal filler treatment usually take between 45 – 60 minutes.
During the appointment, the client will need to have a comprehensive consultation. This includes a discussion in relation to the client’s full medical history and ensuring they are both fully informed regarding the procedure and consented prior to carrying out any treatment.
How are dermal fillers injected?
Treatment is completed using sterile equipment and only dermal fillers purchased from reputable pharmaceutical companies.
An appropriate needle and/or cannula (blunt needle) is used to carry out a series of injections, depending on the desired outcome and individual client assessment.
Local anaesthetic (numbing cream) can also be applied to the area, if appropriate prior to injecting, which can reduce client discomfort.
What can I expect after having dermal filler treatment?
Following treatment with dermal filler, it is common to experience some swelling and possible bruising. This usually resolves within a few days and should be completely healed by two weeks.
Aftercare advice and information is given to clients, including how to access further support in the event of any concerns.
Will it look unnatural or like I have had something ‘done’?
Many clients can feel apprehensive and share concerns regarding treatment outcomes, particularly when new to aesthetic procedures or having had a negative experience.
Predominantly, clients like to have a ‘natural’ result, which can be accomplished through delivering appropriate and individualised treatments.
When it comes to facial aesthetics, there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach. The aim of treatment is to provide optimal facial harmonisation for the client to feel the best version of themselves.
Are dermal fillers painful?
Most leading brands of dermal filler contain a local anaesthetic and a topical anaesthetic cream, or ice, can be used prior to treatment to numb the skin. Treatment need not be painful, and any discomfort experienced during treatment is usually minimal and short-lived.
What are the benefits of dermal fillers?
Dermal filler can replace volume lost due to ageing, provide support and rejuvenation to the underlying structures of the face and create a more youthful appearance.
Further advantages of having filler treatments include restoring or enhancing definition and contours, balancing facial proportions, smoothing and hydrating the skin and lifting the entire face (liquid facelift).
Who are dermal fillers for?
There are certain medical conditions and or medicines that may affect the decision to proceed or the treatment plan. A full medical history and assessment of your expectations is necessary in advance of any decision. All facial aesthetic treatments are unsuitable for clients under 18 years of age.
