Fat Dissolving Injections

Fat Dissolving Injections, also known as ‘intralipotherapy’, are face and body treatments for those difficult to lose, localised pockets of fat.

Here at Angel Face Wetherby, we use Desoface® and Desobody®, which are the next generation of injectable fat dissolvers. They provide a permanent solution to weight loss without the need for surgery.

What is Fat Dissolving / Intralipotherapy?

Intralipotherapy or ‘fat dissolving’ is a treatment administered to reduce and eliminate localised pockets of fat. Desoface® and Desobody® are state-of-the-art, next generation injectable ‘fat dissolvers’ with the active ingredient of sodium deoxycholate.

These innovative ‘fat dissolving’ injections are designed to dissolve the areas of fat that are difficult to lose via traditional routes such as exercise and diet. The product is separated into a face and body concentration for use on different administration areas. Desoface® consists of 0.5% Sodium Deoxycholate and Desobody® is 1.25% Sodium Deoxycholate.

This treatment requires skill with administration. Injections may only be administered subcutaneously, making sure to avoid muscular or dermal tissue.

When treating the body, localised adiposity is reduced, and skin firmness is improved. Desobody® reduces fat from difficult areas such as inner thighs, back fat, saddle bags, abdomen, arms, knees, top of the back, flanks and lipomas. When treating the face, the drainage of excess fluids takes place alongside the decrease in localised adiposity, resulting in fat reduction and improving areas such as double chin.

What is sodium deoxycholate?

Sodium deoxycholate is a precursor to deoxycholic acid which is a naturally occurring bile acid present within the body to breakdown fat. Desoface® and Desobody® are a potent, purified form of the fat dissolving chemical. The main mechanism of sodium deoxycholate works by inducing adipocytolysis (breaking down of the fat cells) by disruption of the cell membrane. When injected, the fat cells are broken down, liquified and permanently destroyed. The destroyed fat cells are then removed from the body naturally through the lymphatic system.

How soon will I see results from fat dissolving injections? How long do fat dissolving injections last?

The process by which sodium deoxycholate destroys the fat cells and the method your body uses to remove them, takes a little time. Following treatment your body will slowly metabolise and expel the released lipids from the obliterated fat cells. Every client is different, but you can expect to start seeing results approximately 3-4 weeks after 1-2 treatments, with the final effect presenting at around 8 weeks.

Generally, 2-4 sessions at 4-6 weekly intervals are required, depending on the area(s) treated and the amount of fat in each area. Subject to the amount of fatty tissue present, sometimes a single treatment is enough.

Further to any treatments with fat dissolvers, if you then follow a healthy lifestyle and maintain – or lose, rather than gain weight – between treatment sessions and thereafter you will retain your results.

How long will fat dissolving treatment take?

Intralipotherapy treatment will usually take between 45 – 60 minutes. During the appointment, the client will need to have a comprehensive consultation. This includes a discussion in relation to the client’s full medical history, ensuring the client is fully informed regarding the procedure and consent obtained prior to carrying out any treatment.

How are fat dissolving injections carried out?

Treatment is completed using sterile equipment and only fat dissolvers purchased from reputable pharmaceutical companies. Initially, a single-entry point is made with a needle and then a cannula (blunt needle) is gently introduced to distribute the product to the treatment area. Local anaesthetic can also be administered to the area, if appropriate prior to injecting, which can reduce client discomfort.

Do fat dissolving injections hurt?

The procedure itself is relatively painless, but if discomfort is experienced, this is generally mild and transient. Ice packs can be used or a local anaesthetic administered, if appropriate, to reduce any client discomfort.

What are the benefits of fat dissolvers?

Desoface® and Desobody® are the newest, most effective fat dissolving injections available. Treatment is quick, with minimal downtime or discomfort. Products are FDA licensed, provide permanent results and can eliminate stubborn areas of fat. Potential outcomes include improvements to the contours of the face and body, a more youthful and slimline appearance and an increase in self-confidence.

What can I expect after fat dissolving injections?

Approximately 15 minutes following treatment, you may experience itching, redness and mild swelling of the treated area(s) – this is because the product is starting to disrupt the fat cells in order to release their contents. This results in inflammatory cell necrosis and a reduction in the size of adipocytes (fat cells).

Therefore, this initial swelling and redness is perfectly normal and even expected. These effects should disappear in approximately 2 hours, but mild symptoms and discomfort may persist for 48 hours.  Any bruising to the area may persist for several days. During the next few weeks, there may be some sensitivity when the fatty tissue is touched.

Bruises and red patches may feel ‘hot’. This is normal and is not a cause for concern unless you are otherwise unwell. Less than 10% of clients report transient nodules. These do not require treatment or intervention and will spontaneously resolve within one month.

You are advised not to drink alcohol or take Ibuprofen within the 24 hours before and after your treatment, as this can increase the risk of swelling and bruising.

It is not recommended to massage the treated area for at least 48 hours following treatment. Some clients prefer to keep the treated areas well supported. Light compression garments can be purchased online or on the high street.
